Ancient Chinese pottery dates back from around 4000 BCE to early centuries and are the existing examples of the finest artistic creations of Chinese potters during the dynastic periods. Lots of ancient Chinese potteries were excavated from different regions in China and these Chinese potteries highlight rich raw materials and the ancient artistic traditions of China at the time.
Ancient Chinese pottery was created using materials like jade, clay and bronze. The oldest of the Chinese potteries were created simply by mixing clay and water and finally baking it to mold into different shapes. The primary use of such potteries was to use them as dominant kitchen wares. As time passed, people started employing new ideas and techniques in pottery creation. They started decorating their vessels with beautifully crafted paintings of well-preserved army, dragon, figures, animals etc with different colors. Tricolor glazed Chinese pottery formed by adding various metal oxides and purple clay pottery made with high intensity, mild colors and fine particles were the popular potteries during Tang and Song dynasty.
